On Making a Delayed Entrance

My return to Medium after a year’s absence

Early morning sun at Ocean Park, Maine

Today the sun took an hour to climb above a cloud bank beyond the islands. It was low tide. I took a photo from the upper deck of the cottage where we are staying during the pandemic. I won’t say it’s a thrilling photo, and that’s pretty much the point. In order to quit procrastinating on my first Medium post in more than a year, I had to lower my standards. A new creative habit doesn’t have to produce brilliance from the get-go. But if you start and keep going, your words may eventually surprise you, which is the best thing about being a writer anyway. You start with a blank screen or page and see what happens…

Et voilà!

While we’re here, I will tell you I have become a collector of Maine sunrises since mid-March when my wife and I relocated to Ocean Park, south of Portland, from Boston. On awakening each morning, I check the wall in front of our bed to see if there is any pink or orange color on it. If so, I move quietly out to the porch to take a photo for Instagram. The text is always the same: “Good morning!” Today the sunrise occurred behind a dull, gray wall, so I did not record it for social media. Later, though, I liked the hole in the sky which the sun made after its delayed entrance.

A delayed entrance is better than no entrance at all. After that, anything can happen!
